The most common mistake we see in the showroom is buying a fan by price rather than by room. A fan that is too small for the space runs flat out all day and still leaves you warm; a fan that is too large for a small bedroom moves air you do not need and costs more than it had to.
Start with the room, not the fan
Blade sweep is the first number to get right. As a rough guide for the ceiling heights common in Sri Lankan houses and apartments:
- Up to about 100 sq ft - small bedroom, study, box room: a 48-inch fan is usually right.
- 100 to 200 sq ft - standard bedroom, small living room: 56-inch.
- Over 200 sq ft - large living or dining room, open-plan spaces: 56-inch or 60-inch, or two fans rather than one.
The 48-inch KDK M48XG covers the first case well. For most bedrooms and living rooms the 56-inch models - the M56RG, M56XG, N56RG, Y56RC and the decorative N56YG - are the sensible default.
Air delivery matters more than blade span
Two 56-inch fans can move very different amounts of air. The figure to compare is air delivery, quoted in cubic metres per minute.
The KDK Y56RC delivers around 225 m3/min. The decorative N56YG delivers around 195 m3/min. Both are 56 inches across. If your priority is moving air in a warm upstairs room, that 30 m3/min difference is worth more than the finish.
Ceiling height and the drop rod
Blades should sit roughly 2.3 to 2.7 metres above the floor. Lower and tall people are uncomfortable; higher and the air movement you feel at seated height falls away noticeably.
On the high ceilings common in older Colombo houses, a longer drop rod brings the fan down into the room where it does some good. On a standard slab, the supplied rod is usually correct. If you are unsure, measure floor to ceiling and tell us the figure.
Where a DC motor pays for itself
The KDK H56DV uses a DC motor and draws a maximum of 38 W - roughly half of a comparable AC fan at full speed. In a bedroom fan running eight hours a night, that difference shows up on the bill. In a hall fan used an hour a day, it will not.
Buy the DC fan for the rooms where the fan is genuinely on for long stretches. Elsewhere the standard models are better value.
A note on what a fan cannot do
A ceiling fan moves air; it does not cool it. In a room that is genuinely hot because of afternoon sun on an unshaded wall, a fan makes the room bearable but will not fix the underlying problem. That is an air-conditioning or insulation question, and we are happy to look at it with you.
